ON THE WAY TO MONVISO (TOUR PROGRAM A)
There is no need to present this giant of Alps. People of Piedmont can admire it every day, Italians know that it is the father of river Po. The name Monviso may derive from the Latin Mons Vesulus that means “isolated and visible mountain” (a reliable landmark for travellers), just like how the Monviso is; it was also mentioned by Virgil in the tenth book of Aeneid. In fact, from the Po Valley, its imposing pyramid shape stands majestically, almost from the middle of nowhere, making the Monviso visible and recognizable even from far away.

Guided visit in English of the ancient town of Saluzzo: birthplace of the writer and patriot Silvio Pellico, it is an extraordinary treasure of history and art. The Cathedral, in Lombard-Gothic style, is decorated with rose-windows and statues. Casa Cavassa, site of the civic museum, was rebuilt with a typical Renaissance interior. The present Town hall is the former Jesuit College, while the older one (1462), with a bold tower, is utilized by the Court of Assizes.
Short drive to Staffarda – visit of the Abbey: Staffarda Abbey (Santa Maria di Staffarda) is a Cistercian monastery located near Saluzzo in north-west Italy; it was founded in 1135 by Manfred I, Marquis of Saluzzo. The abbey became an important local centre for agriculture and held a flourishing market. (audioguides English /French / German)
